Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the effect of silica addition to TEOS-OTES hybrid films on hydrophobic properties. The film was prepared by sol-gel method from solvents such as, Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), octyltriethoxysilane (OTES), isopropanol alcohol (IPA), deionized water (DI) and silica particles. The sols were mixed at a volumetric ratio of 2.4: 0.6: 94: 3 and mixing of silica particles at 0.5, 1, 3, 5 and 10 weight percent. The sol-gel was spin coating onto glass slides and heat treatment at 200 - 450 ºC for 30 minutes. After heat treatment, the film properties was characterized by FT-IR, UV-VIS Spectroscopy, XRD, AFM and contact angle. It was found that contact angle of film increased with increasing amounts of silica particles whereas the transmittance decreased with increasing amounts of silica particles. The optimal hydrophobic (Water contact angle of 119+4.1º) and optical (transmittance of 75%) properties were obtained TEOS-OTES hybrid film containing 1 weight percentage of silica particles.
